How Dental Implants Can Restore Your Smile

Dental implants can restore your smile following tooth loss. They function similarly to the roots of teeth to hold dental crowns or other replacement teeth in place. To be a candidate for this exciting and permanent tooth-replacement option, you should have healthy gums and sufficient bone tissue in the jaw area since dental implants are placed directly in the bone. We offer dental implants at our office in Chevy Chase, MD, where Dr. Anett John can determine if you are a candidate.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small metal posts that anchor replacement teeth, such as dental crowns, firmly and securely in place. Individual teeth can be replaced with a dental implant and crown. It is also possible to replace several teeth at a time when using multiple dental implants in conjunction with a bridge or fixed denture.

A minor surgical procedure is performed to place dental implants directly in jaw bone tissue. This is accomplished by making a small incision in the gums, that is stitched closes afterward. The gums are then given time to heal before dental crowns or other replacement teeth are attached to the dental implants. During this time, a natural process called osseointegration occurs in which the bone tissue permanently fuses with the metal implants, which is one reason dental implants are so secure.

Within a few months, after the gums have healed and osseointegration has occurred, the replacement teeth can be set in place. In the meantime, temporary crowns can be attached to the dental implants until the custom ones can be permanently fixed in place.

Not everyone will be able to benefit from dental implants. Only individuals with healthy gums and enough bone tissue for placing dental implants are candidates. The skilled dentist at our office in Chevy Chase can determine if dental implants are an option for you.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants offer multiple benefits, such as restoring your smile. They are also long-lasting, secure, and versatile. By filling in the gaps where teeth are missing, dental implants also minimize or eliminate many of the side effects that accompany tooth loss, such as facial sagging and drooping.

An especially exciting benefit of dental implants is that they preserve bone tissue. An unfortunate side effect of tooth loss is bone loss. Bone tissue not supporting teeth is reabsorbed by the body. However, the body will not reabsorb bone that is supporting dental implants.
